What is VK?

VKontakte (VK for short) is one of the first social networks in Russia. At the moment, there are more than 97 million active users on the platform every month, and about half of them actively use music services. Besides, VK is one of the most popular sites in Russia and the 16th most visited worldwide; more than 4 million users use VK premium access with advanced functionality.

The service constantly updates the functionality for interacting with the audience. Now musicians can share content in various formats: classic posts, polls, longreads, clips similar to TikTok short videos, playlists and other types of publications.

Since its foundation, VK has been closely working with artists: musicians have many convenient promotion tools there. And, of course, listening to music on VK is monetized: those performers who have posted their music on the platform via labels and distributors receive payments. For foreign artists, the platform is also a vital tool for expanding the audience.

Another essential feature of VK is an extensive network of user music communities to suit any taste. VK represents various musical genres and artists. Musicians can also verify their profiles and upload official releases to their page. For example, Ed Sheeran and Lil Nas X do so.

The social network also works as a full-fledged streaming platform. In 2016, the company created the BOOM service, which became part of the VK ecosystem and is now called VK Music. Users can choose a suitable subscription option for themselves and listen to thousands of licensed tracks.
